Frustration is a blues rock composition about realism, depression, mental complexity, frustrated dreams, failure, jealousy, self-criticism and self-complaining.

The word of “Frustration” has both terminological and literal meanings and either of these definitions here have been applied to. In a psychological term, frustration is a mental situation, where we have set our pathway in order to reach our dreams, for which one is completely determined to achieve, therefore lots of efforts as well as endeavors are invested, but at the end of the day the failure occurs and in spite of our productive strive nothing has been attained. As a result, the frustration posture emerges and the involved person feels himself devastated, experiences the low rate of self-esteem and goes insane because of not being able to reach the aims put forward before while others left us with their successful results behind. Hence, the state of “Frustration” in psychology is fidgeting, getting mad as well as annoyed and not knowing what do to because of having no opportunity to reach our goals through encountering with hurdles in our way.

In a linguistic meaning, in English “Frustration” means having dismal, heartbroken and sorrowful feelings, but here it relates also to the state of being unable to reach what we have planned to do. Therefore, in this song two of these states of mind have been combined in one sense with additional elements of cognitive irritation, such as criticism of our self and complaining about our own characteristics.

In the lyrics, there stands a person who has fed up from obligating himself for doing what he does not want and being broken down from the way planned to lead to the achievement. Moreover, it is begged from others not having any progress, while the narrator could not do what was set forward before, and therefore out of envious spirit the advancement of life by others will cause huge depression, however in case that his friends are also going to fail, it will be a total consolation for him.

“Frustration” is also a song about the realism and being open to see the facts of existence. The storyteller does not want to see which can soothe his depression, but rather to see the situation which in the reality exists. Despite he wants consolation in the form of failure by others, which would be a relief that relies on the reality, but he is not willing to hear from others the things which are not so in the actuality. To his mind, the consolation is not the key for problems, it rather conceals the question and for that reason overburdens it. Therefore, it is stated there “never give me consolation, cause it is not a clue, with it you cannot rescue!” Instead of lying to yourself, it is better to observe the difficulties in our way and obliterate them. The mentioned “weeds” stands out for obstacles of ours. Likewise, he thinks one should obviously see what is fake, what is truth and indulge the exaggeration of the situation.

There it is also stated, that the procrastination is one of the main reasons for frustration, because it delays our plans to realize and as a result all of these impediments pop up due to not dealing with the issue in time.

The depressive mood of the narrator can also be clearly seen in the refrain section. He is used to lose every time, nevertheless according to his mind, it is not his real personality, something has to be resolved thereon.

Then the jealousy part comes. “The story of somebody’s lucky life, is the reason that makes me feel not alive”. When he could not achieve his goals, but the same aim is done by his peer or partner, it is going to be a hugely destructive moral stroke to him, because he has done and struggled more than others did, but the results are not fair, since in his side there is falling but others hold the prosperity.

Another topic that the song touches upon is the economical independence. However, here the young man is ruled and subordinated from his parents, while there is not a financial source for him and he is dependent from his parents’.

The teller thinks that he is not in the right time, because his personal characteristics are younger than actual age. Therefore, it is a big challenge now to find the real self, which has not been reached yet.

The young boy assumes that, there is only ground for all deficiencies and it is just him. That is just a reaitiy. Therefore, due to making too much mistakes, now he is not deserving the self-respect, it is time to waive it. Of course, those thoughts are just the signs of the psychological state called “Frustration” , where we lose our mind and are not conscious on what we are saying. The low rate of self-esteem is the integral element of that mental disorder.

At the end of the song, not only the narrator criticize his own self, but also the people who behave to him in an insincere way. When he was not polite to others, they are making compromise and forgiving him, rather than breaking all connections due to those misconduct. Maybe it would be a nice respectful gesture from his fellows, but it is not what he deserves. Because the state of mind now is the highest peak of the realism. We want to see only the nude reality and face with it. As Kurt Cobain mentioned, that he prefers to be hated for who really is rather than being loved for who is not.​
